David Walter Bowens was a former American football linebacker who played twelve seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He first came to prominence during his time with the Baltimore Colts, where he was selected by the team in the first round of the 1999 NFL Draft. He played for the Colts until 2003, and then joined the Cincinnati Bengals. He finished his playing career with the Bengals in 2006. Bowens has also been a college professor since 2001. Bowens is currently a professor at Northern Illinois University in Elgin, Illinois. In total, he has served as a professor at four schools: Northern Illinois University (2001-2006), Boston College (2007-present), Southern California (2011-present), and Northern Illinois University (2018-present).

He has also been a member of the Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills. Bowens was born in White Sulphur Springs, Pennsylvania on November 7th, 1975. He attended White Sulphur Springs High School where he played linebacker and cornerback from 1994-1996. After high school, Bowens decided to pursue a career in football and entered the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. In 1998, he was redshirted while playing for the Volunteers. David Bowens was originally drafted in the fifth round (158th overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft out of Westerville High School. He played quarterback for the Westerville (Ohio) Warhawks and helped lead them to the playoffs in his senior season. In 1998, Bowens led Westerville to a 10-3 record and a spot in the Ohio League championship game. The next year, he led Westerville to an 11-2 record and a berth in the NCAA Division II title game. In both of his seasons as a starter for Westerville, Bowens threw for 3,711 yards and 30 touchdowns with only 13 interceptions. He was also named first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference as a senior.
