The 6123 error number on QuickBooks arises when a user is accessing a file that is on another computer, restoring a backup, or upgrading corporate files to a recently released version of QuickBooks Desktop.

We’ll discuss three possible ways to resolve the QuickBooks 6123 problem in this blog post. It could be challenging to determine the ideal solution that would work in your situation because the cause of the issue may vary for users. Starting with the first answer would be the best course of action. Try the following option if that one doesn’t work for you, and so on.

Alternatives to fix Error 6123 in QuickBooks

One solution is to manually configure everything by renaming the.nd and.tlg files.

You might not be familiar with the file name extensions.nd and.tlg, but they are a component of QuickBooks files. The setup and parameters necessary to open QuickBooks in a multi-user environment are contained in these files.

The QuickBooks 6123 problem may appear if the.nd and.tlg files become corrupt for some reason. Renaming these files is an easy way to solve this problem. Renaming these files is harmless because there will be no data loss. In fact, these files will be created automatically when you rescan using the QuickBooks Database Server Manager. The steps to rename the.nd and.tlg files are listed below.

  1. Go to the folder containing the company file.
  2. The following step requires you to look for files with the.nd and.tlg extensions. Ensure that the names of these files correspond to those of the company files, such as:
    a) (File with firm name).
    b) (Company name) qbw.nd (_file).
    c) qbw.tlg
  3. Right-click the files now and choose Rename from the menu.
  4. Add “OLD” or any term of your choice to the end of each file to distinguish it from others. Keep in mind that the extension must be added the word, not the file name.
    a) (File with firm name).
    b) (Company name _file) qbw.nd.OLD
    c) qbw.tlg.OLD
  5. To access your company file, launch QuickBooks and log in. Go to the next solution if the problem continues.

Set the correct folder permissions as a second option.

If you don’t have the necessary access to the folder where the company file is placed, QuickBooks may display the 6123 problem. If so, changing the folder permissions could fix the problem. The steps to properly configure folder permissions are as follows:

  1. Choose Properties by right-clicking the folder where the company file is placed.
  2. Click the Security tab in the Properties window, then select Advanced.
  3. After choosing QBDataServiceUserXX, select the Edit option.
  4. Verify that the following settings are in the Allowed position:
  5. Move Through Folders, Run Files, and Read Data
  6. Attributes to Read
  7. Extended Attributes to read
  8. Write Data/Create Files
  9. Make folders and add data
  10. Write Qualities
  11. Please enter extended attributes.
  12. Permissions to Read
If you notice that the folder permissions are not set to “Allowed,” you must make the necessary changes by following the instructions below:
  1. To launch File Explorer, simultaneously press the Windows key and E on your keyboard.
  2. Navigate to the folder containing the company file.
  3. When you right-click the folder, choose Properties.
  4. Select Everyone under the Security tab in the Properties window.
  5. You must include the Everyone option if it isn’t already there.
  6. Place a check next to Everyone and click Add.
  7. Input OK.
  8. Decide on Full Control.
  9. To close the window, click OK after selecting Apply.

Note: All of the folders listed below must have their folder permissions changed. Certain folder names might not be present in your QuickBooks installation. This is due to the possibility that different QuickBooks Desktop versions may have different directories. One thing to keep in mind is to only alter folder permissions if your PC supports them.

The list of folders that require Full Control permissions is provided below.
